Roller brake testing service

HGV roller brake testing for Scunthorpe haulage businesses

At Hardwick Haulage, we provide professional HGV roller brake testing for haulage businesses in and around Scunthorpe – ensuring your vehicles meet DVSA requirements and keeping everyone safe on the road.

Reliable HGV roller brake testing, local to you in Scunthorpe

DVSA regulations require all HGVs and trailers to undergo a roller brake test at least four times a year, including at MOT.

Staying on top of this isn’t just a legal obligation – it is a critical part of keeping your vehicles safe and your business operating without risk.

At Hardwick Haulage, we make the process straightforward. Our state-of-the-art VLT brake rollers are calibrated every six months to the latest DVSA standards, giving you confidence that every test is accurate and fully compliant.

Based in Scunthorpe with flexible opening hours, we offer local haulage businesses a simple solution – backed by over 25 years of experience.
How it works

How we carry out your HGV roller brake test, from start to finish

1. Test arranged and confirmed
Once you get in touch, we confirm your test date and advise you on loading requirements, so the process runs smoothly from the start.
2. Vehicle arrives at our test facility
Bring your HGV or trailer to our site in Scunthorpe. We offer easy access and flexible opening hours to suit your schedule.
3. Loading check
Before the test begins, we double-check that your vehicle is loaded to at least 65% of its design axle weight, as required by DVSA.
4. Full roller brake test conducted
We complete a full laden roller brake test using our VLT 16733 brake rollers, measuring bind, time lag, ovality, imbalance, and max force.
5. Calibrated printout issued
Once completed, we issue a calibrated printout as your official DVSA compliance record, ready to attach to your vehicle’s safety record.

What’s included

What we test during your HGV roller brake test

Bind (brake binding)

We check for any residual braking force after the brake is released. Your vehicle fails if brake bind exceeds 4% of the measured axle weight.

Time lag (brake response time)

We check for any delay between the brake being applied and it starting to work, ensuring your braking system responds as it should.

Ovality (brake consistency)

We measure any difference in braking effort as each wheel rotates. This check is carefully carried out on steered axles only and fails at 70% or higher.

Imbalance (brake balance)

We measure brake imbalance across each axle using maximum brake efforts at each wheel. More than 30% imbalance is recorded as a failure.

Max force (braking force)

We measure the maximum braking force at each wheel in kg, ensuring every wheel meets the minimum DVSA braking effort requirement.

Calibrated printout (for the DVSA)

Once your test is complete, we issue a calibrated printout – your official DVSA compliance record to keep alongside your vehicle’s safety inspection record.
